A repeatable stone and slate pieces UV printing workflow controls the job from material identification and file release through first-article approval, in-process inspection and packing. The printer is only one part of the route. The decisive controls are keeping unlike material lots separate, proving the surface recipe on the actual batch, fixing the loading datum, and recording every approved setting.
This article owns the file-to-pack production route. It does not claim that every stone or slate piece accepts the same ink or pretreatment. Start with what must be delivered, not with a RIP preset. Record dimensions, thickness range, supplied quantity, artwork versions, color and opacity expectations, viewing side, finishing operations, packaging method and due date. Ask whether the part will be cut, bent, cleaned, exposed outdoors or handled repeatedly after printing. Those conditions determine what the sample must prove.
For stone and slate pieces, the job record must distinguish stone type, porosity, sealer, cleft texture, moisture, thickness and edge profile. A supplier description alone is not enough because coatings, contamination and surface energy can vary. Retain one unprinted control and identify the supplier lot on the traveler. If the lot cannot be traced, treat a repeat order as a new qualification rather than silently reusing the old recipe.
Inspect blanks under consistent light. Reject or segregate pieces with loose particles, dust, moisture, chips, sealer variation or unstable high points. Establish a cleaning method that removes contamination without changing gloss, texture or color. Never mix cleaning agents or apply a primer without its safety and compatibility instructions.
UV ink does not adhere equally to all surfaces. Mimaki's substrate-adhesion troubleshooting guidance specifically ties adhesion to substrate and pretreatment and recommends cleaning or surface treatment according to material class. That is a useful principle, but it is not a universal AndresJet setting. Compare an untreated control with only the preparation variants needed for this material, allow the agreed conditioning time, and test appearance plus adhesion before release.
Preflight physical size, orientation, bleed, safe area, embedded images, fonts, color mode and spot-layer names. White and clear layers need their own preview because a correct CMYK image can still fail through a shifted underbase or varnish overrun. For variable work, connect each printable file to a job and part identifier; thumbnails are not reliable production control.
Freeze the approved file as a read-only revision. A late correction creates a new revision, a new proof and an explicit replacement instruction. Operators should never overwrite a released file at the printer. The traveler must show which revision was loaded and which earlier revision was withdrawn.
Define a stable datum, loading direction, printable face and maximum allowed height variation. The fixture or stops must locate the part without damaging it or lifting an edge into the carriage path. For large sheets, confirm flatness and vacuum hold; for smaller pieces, verify every nest position. Run the machine's required condition checks before exposing a customer blank.
Approve the first article against a written standard: correct identity, position within agreed tolerance, expected color and opacity, clean white-to-color registration, no defined surface defect, and acceptable initial handling. Check the first complete load, then sample at intervals based on risk and batch size. Add checks after a pause, cleaning cycle, fixture movement, file change or material-lot change. Inspect more than appearance: verify identity, position, opacity, banding, edge condition, contamination, adhesion at the agreed conditioning point and any post-print operation.
Porous or textured pieces need packaging that prevents rubbing and edge impact; if a sealer is part of the finished construction, test the complete sequence. A printed surface that passes immediately may still fail after bending, stacking, cleaning or abrasion. The approval plan therefore needs a stated wait time and end-use simulation. Do not market a durability claim broader than the test actually performed.
Stop production, label affected output and preserve the last known-good sample. First determine whether the defect is position-specific, file-specific, material-specific or machine-wide. Then check the simplest controlled causes: wrong file or orientation, changed lot, dirty surface, lost datum, poor hold-down, nozzle condition, head gap, layer registration and cure condition. Changing preparation, ink limit and cure energy together may hide the cause and create a fragile recipe.
Record the symptom, affected quantity, suspected cause, single change, retest result and disposition. Reprint, accept by written concession and scrap are different outcomes. Output must not quietly return to normal flow without a documented decision.
Use interleaving, racks or protective packaging that prevents face-to-face abrasion and pressure marking. Confirm that printed surfaces have reached the agreed handling state before stacking. Final inspection must reconcile ordered, loaded, rejected, reworked and packed quantities. Archive the released file, material lot, preparation recipe, machine condition, fixture ID, first-article approval and defect record for the next order.
