Accurate artwork alignment for promotional products comes from one coordinate system shared by the measured object, artwork template, fixture and printer origin. Do not center a logo by eye. Define stable datums, a safe print area, orientation, layer geometry and a measurable first-article tolerance before releasing a batch.

Start with a physical coordinate system

Choose an X datum, Y datum and orientation feature that the operator can repeat. Measure overall size, printable face, raised edges, holes, clips, tapers and height changes. Record the measurement method and sample count. If molded parts vary, define the approved range rather than designing to one unusually perfect blank.

Build safe area and bleed from measured risk

The safe area keeps critical text and logos away from edge and registration risk. Bleed extends background beyond the intended boundary where overspray or fixture protection is controlled. Neither value should be copied as a universal number. Derive it from part variation, fixture repeatability, accepted visual tolerance and the printer/sample demonstration.

For a 60 mm × 40 mm face with an agreed 2 mm exclusion on all sides, the initial safe area is 56 mm × 36 mm. That arithmetic is simple; whether 2 mm is sufficient must be proven across representative blanks and every fixture position.

Make the fixture and file describe the same origin

Give every nest a unique position ID. Put orientation marks outside the print area and store the fixture revision with the artwork revision. Use a low-risk alignment file containing corner marks, centerlines and key exclusion zones. The AJ1206 product page may inform a discussion of camera-assisted positioning and bed size, but it does not remove the need to validate the actual object, fixture and tolerances.

Keep white, color and clear layers registered

Use identical dimensions and origin for all layers. Preview spot separations independently. A deliberate choke or spread should be documented as a design decision, not introduced as an emergency correction at the printer. Check halos on dark objects and varnish overrun under raking light.

Mimaki's flatbed feature documentation shows how UV systems may combine color, white, clear and primer functions; the exact layer sequence remains machine-, ink- and job-specific. Preserve the approved RIP recipe rather than transferring settings between platforms.

What changes with taper, curvature or irregular edges?

A flat template cannot fully describe a tapered or strongly curved surface. Measure where the artwork actually sits, identify distortion risk and decide whether the job needs a different holding or rotary method. Keep critical text away from uncertain edges and seams. Test the largest, smallest and most irregular representative blanks before approving a family.

One good object does not qualify a multi-position fixture. Approve the first full load, then inspect at planned intervals and after any interruption. If one position drifts, isolate whether the cause follows the nest, blank or file before changing the global origin.

Control personalized artwork without losing the approved position

Names, serial numbers and changing logos should inherit one locked master template. Protect the artboard, safe-area guides, layer names and origin from casual edits. Connect every variable record to a fixture pocket or loading sequence, then generate a proof that exposes long names, substituted fonts, wrong orientation and text that enters an exclusion zone.

When a single record is corrected, create a new revision and a specific replacement instruction. Do not leave two similarly named versions in the live queue. Use the same item identifier in artwork, loading, inspection and packing so a well-aligned product also reaches the correct order.

Measure alignment during the batch

Check the first article, first complete fixture and samples at risk-based intervals. Recheck after moving or cleaning the fixture, reloading the file, changing blanks or servicing the printer. Measure from the agreed datum with the same tool; “looks centered” is not an inspection method.

Plot offset by nest position. A repeatably bad pocket can be isolated without moving the global origin and damaging every other position. If a value exceeds tolerance, hold output produced since the last confirmed check, find whether the cause follows the nest, blank or file, and approve a new first article before restarting.

Define ownership of template changes

The designer controls artwork content and layer construction; production engineering controls physical datums, safe boundaries and fixture revision; quality approves the measurement method and tolerance. A release signature confirms that all three describe the same object. This division prevents an operator from compensating for a fixture problem by permanently shifting customer artwork.

Evidence to retain for repeat orders

Keep the approved blank, material and supplier identification, photographs of preparation and loading, released artwork, fixture or bed-position record, machine condition checks, first-article measurements, inspection results and corrective actions. Evidence should let a different trained operator reproduce the decision without relying on memory.

Requalification is triggered by a changed supplier, lot, coating, dimensions, artwork geometry, layer build, ink or pretreatment, fixture, machine condition, acceptance criterion or intended use. If the team cannot confirm that controlled inputs remain equivalent, run a new representative sample. This is also the right point to tell the customer which claim has been verified and which performance remains outside the evidence.

For an equipment inquiry, supply the blanks, layered files, expected order mix, tolerances, end-use stresses and rejected examples. Ask for the demonstration to reproduce the real loading and inspection route. A visually attractive isolated sample is useful, but it does not establish batch repeatability, accepted output or durability outside the stated test.

Frequently asked questions

Should artwork always be centered?

No. Align it to the approved visual and physical datums; geometric center may not be the perceived center.

Can a camera replace a fixture?

Only if the sample test proves reliable detection, orientation and tolerance for the actual parts. Some workflows still need mechanical location.

When does a template need a new revision?

When blank geometry, safe area, layer structure, fixture, origin or acceptance tolerance changes.
