A machine that arrives on schedule can still lose a fortnight if the site is not ready, the extraction is missing or nobody has been released for training. Installation is a project with dependencies, not a delivery with a signature.

This guide sets out what UV printer installation normally covers and what it excludes, which site checks must be finished before the technician arrives, how commissioning becomes formal acceptance, and how to define operator training as a list of tasks so that production can run without supervision.

What UV printer installation covers and what it does not

Installation normally covers assembly, positioning, alignment, connection to services, workflow setup, a commissioning test and handover. Building work, electrical supply installation, extraction ducting and network cabling are usually yours.

The boundary matters because the excluded items are the ones that stop a start-up. Ask the supplier for a written scope with two columns: what the installation team will do, and what has to exist before they arrive. If a line is unclear - for example who supplies the compressed air connection or the final electrical isolator - settle it in the contract rather than on the day.

Where the machine has been configured with specific fixtures, ask whether fitting and aligning the first fixture is part of the installation visit. It usually is, and it is the fastest way to transfer practical knowledge about how the jig is set, checked and stored.

Which site readiness inputs must be finished before the team arrives?

Five site items must be finished before the team arrives.

Final position and floor loading, power supply with the correct phases, extraction or filtration, the access route for panels and consumables, and the material storage area.

Each has a failure mode that costs a day. A machine that is positioned two metres from where the extraction drops cannot be commissioned cleanly. A supply that is one phase short turns a calibration day into an electrician's visit. Material stored in a cold or damp corner prints differently from material stored in the production room, which makes the commissioning test unrepresentative.

Site readiness is also a safety question. Machine guarding, safe access for loading heavy panels and the isolation points for maintenance should be planned before installation, not retrofitted afterwards. The practical standards for machine safety and maintenance isolation are described by HSE's guidance on work equipment in the United Kingdom and by OSHA's control of hazardous energy requirements in the United States. Both frameworks treat the guarding and the safe operating envelope as part of the installation, not as an accessory to it.

Mechanical setup, alignment and utilities

Mechanical setup is where print quality is decided. Levelling, gantry alignment, head clearance and transport locking removal are all recorded steps, and each should be checked with an instrument rather than by eye or by feel.

Ask the technician which measurements are taken during setup and where they are recorded. A flatbed that is not level prints inconsistent density across the table; a gantry that is not aligned produces banding that no profile can fix; head clearance set from a template rather than a measurement turns into a substrate limitation later. Recording the values creates a baseline, so that a drift six months later can be measured against something.

Utilities follow the same logic. Confirm the electrical supply, the extraction airflow and the compressed air connection against the requirements in writing, and confirm what the operator has to check daily. Where inks, primers or cleaning agents are in use, the handling requirements and the relevant safety data sheets belong in the installation pack, and OSHA's hazard communication requirements describe how that information is expected to reach the people handling the materials. Where the local regulator treats emissions from the printing and curing process as an industrial activity, the European Commission's summary of industrial emissions requirements is the starting point for what that means in practice.

How are commissioning tests used as acceptance criteria?

Commissioning is where the purchase becomes verifiable.

The machine should print a defined artwork on a defined substrate and be judged against the criteria you agreed before it shipped, not against an impression of a test file.

Bring your own acceptance list to the visit. If you approved a sample before ordering, print the same artwork on the same material and compare it with the physical standard. Record the settings that reproduce the approved result, and keep the print and the record together, because those two artefacts are what a later operator will use when the process drifts.

Where criteria are numerical, agree the measurement method in advance so the result can be discussed rather than argued: adhesion by tape test method, colour against a measured reference, registration by a defined tolerance. Where the criteria were defined on a sample, the same method should be used here, otherwise the comparison is between two different definitions of acceptable.

Operator training should be defined as tasks, not features

Training is only complete when the operator can run the machine, judge a first article and recognise a fault. Feature walkthroughs produce confident operators who cannot tell when a print has gone out of specification.

Write the task list before the visit and have the trainer sign it off. A practical list covers daily start-up and shutdown including the checks that must be recorded, substrate loading and fixture handling, file preparation and nesting, colour and layer verification, first-article approval against the retained standard, routine cleaning and the intervals attached to it, consumable replacement, and the fault patterns that mean "stop and escalate" rather than "adjust a setting".

Where the supplier includes training days, express the commitment in the same terms. Documentation, spare kits and consumable stock on day one

The machine should not enter production until its documentation exists in your building and its consumable and spare position is understood. A manual that exists on a supplier's website is not a maintenance plan.

Check the pack against the delivered configuration: operation and maintenance manual, electrical and pneumatic diagrams matching your machine, calibration and maintenance schedule with intervals, spare-parts list with part numbers, and the commissioning test record for your serial number. Confirm the spare parts included in the order and decide which consumables you will hold locally. If the supplier states a spare-parts availability period, note which components it covers and which are classed as consumable, because that distinction decides what you stock.

Decide where the daily and weekly checks are recorded. A simple log that captures cleaning, lamp hours, ink levels and any fault code is enough to turn a maintenance schedule into something that happens rather than something that was discussed during installation.

What does the first production week look like?

The first week is a ramp, not a normal week.

Plan reduced output, one product family at a time, and a daily review of rejects by cause so early problems are solved while support is still close.

Sequence the ramp deliberately. Start with the product that has the most stable material and the simplest layer structure, and move to harder work once the operator can hold the standard. Record the settings that pass, and keep the first approved part as the internal reference for that product. Keep a reject log with a cause column; "waste" is not a cause, and a log that says so cannot be acted on.

Agree how support is reached in that week: who is contacted, by which channel, and what response is expected. The escalation path matters more during the ramp than at any other time, because that is when most questions appear and when an unanswered question turns into a week of trial and error.

Handover sign-off checklist

Sign the handover on evidence, not on presence. The checklist below turns an installation visit into a documented start of production, and it is the document a service engineer will ask for later.

  • Commissioning test results recorded against the acceptance criteria, with the physical standard retained.
  • Approved settings documented for at least one production product, with the print mode and pass count.
  • Alignment and levelling measurements recorded with the instrument used.
  • Documentation set delivered and checked against the configuration.
  • Spare parts and consumables listed, with the local stock decision made.
  • Operators trained, with the task list signed and dates recorded.
  • Service escalation contacts and the response route confirmed in writing.
  • Safety briefing completed: guarding, isolation, chemical handling and extraction.

Which questions must be settled in the order contract?

Scope, training and criteria belong in the contract.

All three are difficult to negotiate once the crate is open in your building, so settle them before the order is placed.

Ask what is included in the installation visit and what is charged separately, how many training days are committed and what they cover, who supplies the consumables for commissioning, what happens if the site is not ready when the team arrives, and which criteria will be used to accept the machine. Add the service escalation path and the spare-parts availability period for the model you are buying.

With those answers attached to the order, installation stops being the appendix to a purchase and becomes the beginning of a production process you can audit - which is the only version of commissioning that a factory can rely on.
