For B2B corrugated packaging, print durability means the graphics remain acceptable through rubbing, converting, packing and the intended distribution route. Test the actual liner, ink construction and finished pack, not just a fresh flat sheet. Separate print damage from paper-fiber failure and structural damage, then set acceptance limits around readable information and the customer's visual requirements.

What must the printed package survive?

Start with the handling route. Flat sheets can rub in a stack, printed blanks can crack during folding, and finished packs can scuff against adjacent boxes. Each stage introduces a different contact. A single scratch test on an unconverted sheet cannot represent all of them.

Identify the outer liner, board grade, flute construction, print face and any existing coating. Record whether the package is a presentation box, shipping carton or display component. The required appearance after transport will differ, and the acceptable condition must be agreed rather than assumed.

The cardboard and corrugated packaging printing collection is relevant when discussing the print system, but the package specification determines the trial. Include the expected packing density, separators and handling sequence so the sample represents how printed faces actually meet other surfaces.

Build a test plan around the point of contact

A practical plan evaluates both flat print and converted packaging. Keep unexposed controls and record the first stage where damage appears. That makes the result actionable: a rubbing failure at the face, a crack at a crease and a crushed corner do not call for the same correction.

Keep print qualification distinct from package structural qualification. Good rub resistance says little about compression strength or closure security. Conversely, a sound box can arrive with an unacceptable scuffed brand panel. Record both when the finished package needs both.

Use a reproducible rub comparison

For laboratory comparison, choose a method appropriate to printed packaging and agree the conditions. ASTM D5264 addresses abrasion resistance of printed materials using the Sutherland rub tester or equivalent specified apparatus. Its public scope includes folding cartons and corrugated boxes; the full method and acceptance requirement should be agreed with the test provider.

An internal comparison can also help development if the contact surface, load, action and inspection are documented. Do not call a hand-rub exercise an ASTM result. Operator pressure and motion vary, so a casual test is weak evidence for comparing suppliers or approving a large order.

Include the darkest broad area and the smallest important text. Broad dark coverage often makes visible scuffing easier to recognize, while fine characters reveal loss of information. Retain the contacting material if transferred ink is part of the finding.

Use matched specimens at the agreed post-print condition. If one sample is tested immediately and another after a different interval, the comparison contains an uncontrolled variable. Record the preparation and timing rather than using the description “dry” as the only release criterion.

How do you distinguish ink loss from liner failure?

Inspect the damaged area and the material that separated. Ink removed from an otherwise intact face suggests a different interface problem from paper fibers lifting with the printed layer. A torn liner cannot be interpreted as a clean measurement of ink adhesion alone.

Keep an unprinted sample from the same board lot and perform only appropriate comparisons on it. If the liner itself sheds or fractures under the contact, review board and converting conditions. Adding a protective print layer may not correct a weak or damaged face.

Map damage against flute direction, score lines and cutting locations. The durability approval should record whether the issue occurred before or after converting rather than rewriting the whole troubleshooting procedure.

Photograph close details with a scale and preserve the specimen. Notes such as “ink scratched” are insufficient if the actual failure includes liner tearing or crushed board beneath the graphic. Clear evidence avoids unnecessary changes to ink settings when the cause lies elsewhere.

Evaluate folds using the production blank

Fold durability must be checked with the intended score geometry, board orientation and converting sequence. A hand-bent coupon with no representative crease may create a misleading failure. Test the finished design, especially when heavy coverage crosses a fold.

For an illustrative presentation carton, print a blank containing a dark panel across one fold and fine text near another. Convert it with the intended tooling, inspect immediately after folding, then inspect after the planned pack assembly. Record whether a visible line is ink fracture, exposed liner or board damage.

If the design permits it, reducing critical artwork at a high-stress fold may be preferable to repeatedly adjusting the print. If the artwork cannot change, the board, ink construction and converting method need to be qualified together. A single variable trial can help identify which change actually improves the result.

Do not infer that more varnish means better folding performance. It adds another layer that must accommodate the converting operation. Compare varnished and unvarnished constructions on the real blank before specifying the finish across the entire package.

Moisture and product contact require separate questions

Only include moisture or spill tests that represent the intended use, and assess the board as well as the print. A UV-cured image does not make a paper package waterproof. Edge absorption, liner changes and structural effects may remain even if the colored area does not smear.

Specify the agent, application and inspection interval. Water, detergent and the packaged product are different exposures. If the product could contact the printed face, involve the responsible packaging and compliance specialists. A rub or splash test does not establish food-contact suitability, migration compliance or odor acceptability.

Keep any formal compliance work outside an ordinary print-quality approval. This trial plan concerns durability of graphics and handling performance; it is not a substitute for the regulatory assessment of the package's intended contents.

Approve the printed package with a traceable record

The approval record should connect the board lot, artwork, ink layers, print mode and converting route to the tested specimens. Use written rejection conditions such as lost essential text, unacceptable transfer or a fold appearance beyond the agreed limit sample. Avoid an overall score that hides a failed critical feature.

  • Identify the liner and board grade on each specimen.

If all specimens are removed and mixed together first, useful evidence about pressure points and rubbing direction may be lost.

For a repeat order, a smaller confirmation trial may be appropriate when the material, ink and distribution arrangement remain unchanged. A revised carton size or separator can change contact even when the printed graphic is identical. Review those changes with the packaging team rather than treating them as unrelated logistics details.

FAQs

Can the same result release every corrugated board supplier?

No. Similar board descriptions can conceal different liners, coatings and converting behavior. Qualify the permitted supply range and retain material identities with the results. When a supplier changes, review the relevant tests instead of assuming a previous print sample represents the new board.

Does a successful laboratory rub test prove transport performance?

It supports one controlled comparison, not the entire distribution route. Packing pressure, contact surfaces, vibration and handling can introduce different damage. Use representative finished-pack evidence where transport appearance matters, and keep laboratory results separate from any broader shipping claim.
