Reliable UV printing on rigid promotional signs starts with substrate identification, contamination control and a documented adhesion test. “Rigid signage” is an application category, not a material specification. PVC, acrylic, polycarbonate, coated metal, corrugated plastic and composite boards can require different cleaning, treatment and approval methods.
Ask whether the sheet is cast, extruded, coated, laminated, painted or treated for printing. Mark the intended side before removing protective film. Compare delivery documents with the physical sheet and quarantine mixed or unidentified stock. A coating change can matter more than the base material.
Dust, oil, fingerprints, release agents and residue can interfere with wetting. Follow the substrate and ink supplier’s approved cleaning instructions. Use clean lint-free materials, control solvent identity and drying time, and avoid touching the prepared face. Do not assume one solvent is safe for every plastic or coating.
Primer, corona, plasma, flame treatment and mechanical preparation are different processes with different risks.[1][2] Use only a method approved for the substrate, facility and ink system. A treatment can affect appearance, safety, repeatability and downstream recycling or finishing. Test untreated and treated candidates under controlled conditions instead of stacking several changes into one sample.

Check adhesion after the agreed conditioning time, then test the operations the sign will encounter: cutting, routing, bending, mounting, cleaning, stacking and exposure. Record the failure interface. Ink removed from an intact face suggests a different cause from a coating or paper face that separates with the ink.
Release the combination, not just the material name. The record should identify substrate lot, preparation, primer if used, file revision, ink build, print mode, conditioning, test method, rating, photos and approver. Define when changes trigger requalification.

Beading, pinholes, uneven film and localized pullback can indicate contamination or poor wetting, but appearance alone does not identify the cause. Compare an untreated control with one approved preparation change. If surface-energy measurement is part of the process, specify the instrument or dyne method, operator practice, expiration controls and acceptance range supplied by the responsible technical source.
Do not copy a generic dyne target into a purchase specification without confirming it for the ink and substrate. Surface treatment can decay with time, and a nominal material family can contain coatings or additives that change the result.
Primer is justified when an approved test shows that it is needed to meet the agreed result and the process can apply it safely and consistently. Record product identity, batch, application tool, coverage, drying or curing condition and permitted print window. Check whether primer changes color, gloss, recyclability, finishing or worker controls.
A clean-looking sheet is not evidence that the process was followed. The release record and sample result provide traceability when a later lot fails.
Inspect whether ink separated from an intact substrate, a coating lifted from the base, a paper face tore, or a primer layer failed. Photograph the interface and compare locations across the sheet. A failure isolated to one edge may indicate handling or cleaning coverage; a failure limited to heavy ink regions may point to the layer build or cure. Change one variable, then repeat the agreed test.
Record the commercial material name and the technical identity needed to distinguish it: supplier, SKU, lot, base, coating, treatment, thickness, color, printable side and protective film. Add storage condition, cleaning method, approved treatment, print recipe, conditioning interval, test method, result, photographs and approver. Link the record to the artwork and finished application.
Define the smallest change that triggers review. A new supplier, coating, treatment age, primer, ink set or finishing process normally deserves attention even when the material keeps the same generic label. Incoming inspection should compare the new lot with the approved reference and quarantine unexplained differences. This record turns surface preparation from an operator habit into a controlled input for estimating, production and repeat orders.
