How Can You Troubleshoot Ink Smearing Issues in UV Flatbed Printers?

UV ink that “smears” may be under-cured, poorly bonded, physically rubbed before it is ready, deposited with excessive overspray, or transferred from contaminated hardware. Identify when and how the mark appears before raising UV power or adding primer. Stop handling uncured ink, consult the ink SDS and follow the printer’s approved cleaning procedure.

Start with a safe isolation test

  1. Pause the job and prevent skin contact with uncured ink.
  2. Photograph the defect and record the mode, layers, UV setting and substrate lot.
  3. Run a nozzle check and inspect the carriage path for permitted user checks.
  4. Verify object flatness, fixture stability and model-specific head clearance.
  5. Print a small control patch with the approved profile.
  6. Evaluate cure and adhesion using the agreed method after the stated conditioning time.
  7. Change one variable and repeat.

Roland’s model-specific guidance notes that dirty UV-LED irradiation surfaces can reduce curing and that a dirty print surface can impair adhesion. The exact cleaning material and access limits must come from the installed machine’s manual.

Do not solve adhesion by curing alone

More UV exposure cannot reliably correct an incompatible or contaminated surface, and excessive energy may affect gloss, flexibility or heat-sensitive media. Likewise, primer is not universal. Compare cleaned, untreated and approved pretreated samples using the same ink load and acceptance test.

When should you request service?

Escalate if UV output alarms occur, the lamp/LED does not behave consistently, media or ink contacts the carriage, negative pressure appears unstable, or the approved profile suddenly fails across known control media. Preserve the failed sample and do not wipe away all evidence.

Build a useful smearing support case

Can more UV power damage a print?

Why does cured ink peel off?
